  • Total Time: 50
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your baking dish with butter.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir to mix the dry ingredients well.
  3. In another large bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg, buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract; mix until fully combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle. Spread softened butter over the rolled-out dough, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Tightly roll the dough into a log and slice it into equal rolls. Place the rolls in your prepared baking dish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the rolls have risen and are slightly golden on top.
  8. While the rolls are baking, prepare the frosting by mixing the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  9. Once baked, allow the rolls to cool slightly before spreading the cream cheese frosting over the top. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For a gluten-free option, substitute regular flour with a gluten-free flour blend. You can also add espresso powder for a mocha twist or chocolate chips for added richness.
