Everything You Need to Make Perfect Espresso at Home
Espresso is the foundation of coffeehouse culture—and with the right technique, you can make every espresso drink at home just as well as any barista. This hub covers every espresso recipe on the site, from the simplest single shot to layered specialty drinks that look like they took hours to perfect.
What Is Espresso?
Espresso is coffee brewed by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee at high pressure—typically 9 bars—in 25–30 seconds. The result is a concentrated, 1–2 oz shot with a rich, creamy layer on top called crema. That crema is what separates a true espresso from other strong coffees.
You don’t need a commercial machine to make real espresso at home. A quality semi-automatic machine (Breville, De’Longhi, Gaggia) or even a Moka pot gives you everything you need for the recipes below.
Classic Espresso Drinks
- Espresso Shot — 1 oz of pure concentrated coffee, the foundation of every drink
- Doppio — Double shot, the default in most specialty cafés
- Americano — Espresso diluted with hot water; smooth and less intense
- Cortado — Equal parts espresso and warm milk; silky, balanced
- Macchiato — Espresso “stained” with a small amount of foam or steamed milk
- Cappuccino — Equal thirds espresso, steamed milk, and thick foam
Espresso Ratios That Actually Work
The most common mistake home baristas make is using the wrong ratio. For a balanced shot, aim for a 1:2 ratio by weight: 18g of coffee in, 36g of liquid espresso out, in 25–30 seconds. Adjust your grind finer for longer extraction time, coarser for shorter.
